Finding the courage to address family violence

We have addressed many different legal issues related to domestic violence on our blog, from obtaining a restraining order to financial abuse and stalking. For some people, however, simply speaking up about domestic violence can be incredibly difficult and may even seem impossible. There are a number of reasons why victims of family violence and those who have witnessed their children suffer at the hands of an abuser decide to remain silent and in this post we will draw attention to this concerning facet of family violence and victims' rights.

Protecting children from domestic violence

As a parent, there may be a number of issues you are struggling with, from financial worries to concerns about your child's performance in class. However, domestic violence is especially disturbing and far too many families have had to deal with abuse. If you have witnessed domestic violence in the household or have been abused yourself, you should immediately take steps to address the abuse. Sadly, some people are silenced by threats or feel as if they do not have any options and continue to endure mistreatment.

Domestic violence: facts and prevention

A household that sees disagreements on even a mildly regular basis can quickly transform into an exhausting experience. One that sees such disputes involving violence can be outright dangerous. When a California family is suffering from domestic violence, piecing relationships back together can often seem impossible. However, there are a number of resources family members can look to in this difficult time of need.

Heed the warning signs of stalking behavior

Stalking in California is not something done mainly by strangers. In fact, the opposite is true; although sometimes it is done by a stranger, stalkers are many times an estranged spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend. It is not limited to adults either; teens can be stalking victims too. It can be a frightening experience for anyone who thinks they are being stalked, and it is something that you should take very seriously.

The scary subtleties of emotional violence

Anyone on the outside of an abusive situation is, inevitably, at more of a distance to the issue than the victim themselves. This detachment is often what allows hidden problems to go unnoticed, as many Californians have painfully experienced. What many family and friends are unaware of -- despite their good intentions -- is that it can take years to heal from the extent of damage from domestic violence. This damage is commonly found within emotional domestic abuse.

Overcoming domestic financial abuse

Those in Los Angeles who have not experienced domestic violence often find it difficult to understand why breaking away from such abuse is so hard. Many of the abuse victims that we here at the Thomas Law Offices have worked with report hearing the same question over and over: "Why don't you just leave?" If you are currently suffering through domestic abuse, you know that leaving is not that easy.

Steps when there is a 911 call about domestic violence

Domestic violence does not discriminate against alleged defendants or victims. It occurs between California individuals regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic backgrounds and age. As described by the Guidelines for Effective Response to Domestic Abuse, within the state generally and the law enforcement community specifically, most law enforcement agencies have a domestic violence protocol.

Determining a domestic abuser's custody rights

Domestic violence continues to be an issue that plagues certain marriages in Los Angeles. Whether such abuse represents a single incident or a continued pattern of behavior, the results can be just as damaging. Indeed, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that the number of intimate partner attacks that occur in the U.S. averages out to about 20 per minute. When such incidents result in divorce, the perpetrators' actions are taken into account when determining factors such as child custody. Yet does a history of domestic violence automatically prevent one from having any future association with his or her kids?
