What does a supervised visitation order do?

There are many different types of court orders that judges here in California can issue in child custody and visitation cases. What types of custody/visitation orders are issued in a case can have substantial impacts on the parents and children involved. Thus, when a parent is in child custody or visitation proceedings, it can be very important for them to understand what orders could potentially be issued in their case and what implications such orders would have if issued. Such an understanding can help parents with having the background information they need to make wise decisions in child custody and visitation matters. Family law attorneys can help parents with developing such an understanding.

One type of visitation order that is sometimes issued in cases here in California is a supervised visitation order. Courts can issue such an order when they determine that a child's interests would be best served by only allowing their noncustodial parent to have visitation with them under the supervision of a neutral party. Some situations in which judges sometimes issue a supervised visitation order include when a noncustodial parent has a domestic abuse history or when there is a high risk of a parental abduction.

These orders, when issued, do several things, including:

  • Require that visitations of the noncustodial parent in question with the child be supervised.
  • Set what time the supervised visits will occur.
  • Set what the duration of the supervised visits will be.

Also, judges have the option to set other specifics about supervised visits within these orders, such as where the visits will happen and who the supervising party will be.

Thus, whether a judge decides to issue a supervised visitation order in a visitation case and what terms such an order contains if they do can be remarkably impactful.

Lawyers can help parents who are involved in custody/visitation matters with figuring out if the issue of supervised visitation could likely arise in connection to their matter and help them with navigating supervised visitation issues if they do come up.

I had a complicated case with a lot of assets. We had a business to divide and could not make heads or tails of it. My previous
