Arrest marks San Diego man’s third domestic violence complaint

The common concern that many who are suffering at the hands of abusive spouses in Los Angeles is that their claims of domestic violence may not be taken seriously, or that even if action is taken against their attackers, little will result from it. When a domestic abuser is able to avoid serious consequences for his or her actions, one might argue that he or she may feel empowered to continue (and, in some cases, even escalate) the violence. At the same time, his or her victim may believe that there is little that he or she can do to escape and subsequently protect him or herself from continued attacks.

What should you know about domestic violence?

People all across the state of California have the misfortune of being trapped in violent relationships. The Thomas Law Offices work to provide you with information that you should have regarding domestic violence, so that you can recognize the warning signs and work toward getting out of a bad situation.

Domestic abuser’s sentence too lenient, claims victim

Many people who are victims of domestic violence in Los Angeles are reluctant to come forward or to involve the police and press charges against their abuser. One reason crimes such as this often go unreported is that these cases can be difficult to prosecute. Those who have suffered violence or abuse at the hands of a loved one are then left with a feeling that justice has not been served.

Domestic violence, immigration and divorce

When it comes to divorce, each case is unique. For example, some couples may not have children, while others will go through a bitter dispute over child custody. Furthermore, there are other unique considerations, such as those who immigrated to the U.S. to get married. Unfortunately, some people in Los Angeles who have immigrated worry about the potential consequences of splitting up with their spouse, even if they are subjected to domestic violence. As a result, it is pivotal for everyone in this position to understand their rights.

Can you safely escape an abusive relationship?

Finding yourself caught in the middle of an abusive relationship is often alarming and debilitating. While it is critical to get out immediately and seek protection and safety, doing so can bring with it an onslaught of challenges and dangers. Fortunately, with the right approach, there is a way to safely escape an abusive relationship and move on.

Why people do not leave abusive relationships

Although there are many California residents who are aware that domestic violence does occur in households, many people do not understand just how widespread domestic abuse really is. In fact, it is estimated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been in abusive relationships. Even if it is known that domestic violence is common, it is often not understood why people who are in abusive relationships simply do not leave.

What happens when a restraining order is granted?

Some divorces and separations in California involve allegations of domestic violence. When one spouse is accusing the other spouse of violence or threats of violence, a court may agree to grant a domestic violence restraining order. A parent may petition the court for a restraining order to protect themselves as well as any minor children that they have.

Allegations of domestic abuse in child custody cases

Divorcing couples in California and around the country often find it difficult to negotiate calmly when there are children involved, and this can be particularly true when there have been allegations of domestic violence or neglect. The courts tend to take these allegations seriously because child psychology research has found that children who suffer this kind of abuse often have issues that can stunt their emotional development and persist well into adulthood.

Domestic abuse has gone digital, prompting new California laws

Domestic abuse includes verbal and written harassment. These days, of course, there are multiple ways to harass a person without actually doing it to one's face. While this is easier for the person doing the harassing than confronting the person, it can nonetheless be terrifying to the victim.

Can those accused of domestic violence sue for defamation?

This week a Los Angeles comedian revealed on social media that she had been in an abusive relationship, and that she would no longer refrain from talking about the abuse either online or onstage. The woman's Instagram post contained photos of her bruised arms and legs as evidence of the abuse she said she endured over the course of the relationship. While the comedian has received and outpouring of support, one might also wonder about the fate of the accused in a situation involving false accusations.
